Every year, 13,000 Scot's die from smoking related illnesses. 35,000 people are admitted to hospital every year in Scotland because of smoking related probems, costing the NHS £200 million. According to the Cheif Medical Officers for Scotland, smoking is the biggest cause of preventable death in Scotland.
This is why the Scottish Exec has decided to ban smoking in public places - a policy which has gathered country-wide support.
At 20 Cigarettes per day you are 10-15 times more likely to die of a heart attack than a non smoker. You have about 25-30% chance of dying of lung cancer which is nearly impossible to treat. That’s 1 person in 3. Will you be the 1 in 3 friends? Only 5 out of 100 survive 5 years even if caught early and a whole lung removed. Other smoking induced cancers - lip, tongue, voice box (King George VI, John Wayne, Nat King Cole and Sammy Davies Junior all died of smoking induced cancer of the Larynx), gullet, stomach, and large bowel.
Smoking causes cancer of the bladder and increases the risk of breast cancer and cancer of the cervix proving that the cancer agents circulate through the blood. Many brain tumours are secondary cancer from the lung. Smokers get premature wrinkles as smoking breaks down skin collagen and blood vessel disease leading to amputation of legs. Smoking also restricts blood flow to your mouth, which causes bad breath (not just the smell of fag ash), gum disease and could end up with you losing your teeth. About 2,000 people die in Scotland every year from the results of diseases related to passive smoke. Smoking is now socially unacceptable…
